Why did I join MAT Live Course?
I am a fitness bootcamp instructor since 2013. Designing bootcamp programmes for helping clients to get stronger and move better has always been challenging because I do not know whether my clients are improving with my workout programme. It has been more like a “Visually and Guessing” assessment.
This is why i joined MAT assessment course, because i would like to add another tool to my business for tracking client’s progress, both in movements and also assessing their risk of injuries. In other words, learning and implementing MAT tool, will help me to track whether the fitness programme I have designed and implemented is helping my client/s, via DATA measured from MAT tool rather than guessing. Having the data to show clients, will also help to increase their confidence in continuing the given intervention.
What did I learned during the MAT Live Course?
The MAT Live course i joined was held in Singapore from 22 to 23 September 2018. One of the things I like about this LIVE course is that the course teaches the theory and followed by practical sessions, which helps me to familiarise with the MAT tool.
Few assessment techniques I find it useful, includes the weight bearing lunge test (WBLT), where it indirectly assess the dorsiflexion of the client by measuring the maximal advancement of the tibia over the rear-foot in a weight-bearing position. What I learned is that, if the WBLT test result is less than 10cm and/or with more than 2cm asymmetry side to side, there is a higher risk in getting hamstring injuries. In addition, there will also be restriction to certain lunge movements too, which, concur with the data collected from the star excursion balance test (SEBT).
In this case, one of the intervention I would introduce is foam rolling exercises to the client, where they can do it at home. This intervention is given for improving the client’s range of dorsiflexion movement. Follow up will be done after several weeks, with the measurement of WBLT. If there was little or no improvement, a different intervention approach will be given.
In addition to WBLT and SEBT, there were more test taught by Stephen King and his team within the two days course.
Another thing i particularly like about the course is that it comes with case study discussion at the end of the course. We were teamed up in a group of 3 to 4 person, and each of us were given a scenario, where we need to come up with a test method and intervention.
Is it worth attending the MAT Live Course?
I highly recommend the course to personal trainers and fitness instructors. MAT assessment is a power-tool that can help you to collect valuable data that not only helps in designing programme, and also can be used to track the client’s progression in improvement their functional movements.
